Since 2003, dental teams all across America have been coming together to help underserved kids get the dental care that they deserve.
The GKAS movement began in a run-down dental clinic in St. Louis where two dentists came together and helped over 400 kids receive free dental care. Dr. Jeff Dalin and Dr. B. Ray Storm managed to scrape together 15 dental chairs and held what is known as the first Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) Day. This grass-roots effort is what started off a nation-wide initiative to spread awareness of the importance of dental care on one’s overall health and to provide free dental work to kids that may not otherwise have access to it.
Today, GKAS events “provide free oral health education, screenings, preventive and restorative treatment to over 300,000 children,” according to the American Dental Associations website.
