Athena/Jordan Case Scenarios

Instructions:

  1. Choose a Reporter
  2. The Reporter records your group’s responses either on the Word document or handwrite on notebook paper
  3. The Reporter may tell the entire training group of your small group’s responses
  4. You will have ten (10) minutes to complete the activity
    1. Read the scenario
    2. Answer the two (2) questions at the bottom of EACH scenario

Scenario

Athena: Athena, a 19-year-old woman, is at the Family Planning Center for a pregnancy test. This is Athena’s fourth visit for a pregnancy test at the Center in the last few months. The nurse practitioner notices scars on her arm that look like cigarette burns. The nurse practitioner asks some questions to build a relationship with Athena, especially since this is the nurse’s second time examining and conducting the pregnancy test with Athena. The nurse discovers Athena is a college student who started dancing at a strip club to pay for classes. Her boyfriend helps her make extra money by setting her up with his friends for sex.

Questions to Answer:

  1. Considering all the information, does this appear to be a case of human trafficking? Why or why not?

  2. What you might notice in your role and whether or not you’d be concerned?

Scenario

Jordan: 16-year-old Jordan comes in for a walk-in appointment at a community clinic for an STI test. The front desk person takes note that Jordan says he is just visiting and is unable to give an address and Jordan appears thin and unkept. When Jordan meets with the health care provider, Jordan states symptoms of penile discharge and discomfort. When the provider asks Jordan when and how he thinks he thinks the symptoms started, Jordan informs the provider he has survival sex. The health care provider asks a few questions about Jordan’s living situation. Jordan tells the provider his parents kicked him out of the house, and he is living on the street.

Questions to Answer:
